out & about

It's a heat wave!  Temps rose to 65 degrees this weekend, so we suited up and hit the trails.

The most amazing blue sky!

I love seeing all the signs of life in late winter.  Woodpeckers have definitely been visiting these dead trees...

...and recently, a coyote was here.  Scat that is primarily fur means that the carnivore most likely picked clean a recent kill.

More scat, with quite a few persimmon seeds.

Moss is sprouting sporophytes, which is part of their reproductive cycle.  I love seeing the green...AND the new life!  Look at it go!

Speaking of green, check out this green fungus!  It's actually just a regular white bracket fungus with algae growing on it.

It was a nice pop of color on the dark log.  Also nearby, fungus growing that looked like a specimen on a microscope slide.

Up close, it resembled coral.

I'm not sure what kind of fungus it was, but it was so cool!

Many harbingers of spring, but plenty of winter reminders too.  I couldn't believe how much ice remained, even with the warm temperatures.

Ice everywhere!  Just a few days ago, I saw a flock of Canadian geese sleeping on an ice-covered pond.  The cold doesn't bother them, and this is a place where they'd be especially safe from predators.

That pond ice is surely melted by now.  It's so balmy that all the windows are open, to the delight of the cats (who only perch in this window BEFORE I've had time to make the bed.).

Their whole focus is on OUTSIDE.

Borga, too, is getting a lot more open-air car trips.

Cold weather is returning by the weekend, so for now we'll be out and about as much as possible...keeping the windows open...and enjoying those beautiful sunrises!

Have a great week!
