apple scab and color fab

Mid-May is a wonderful time of year.  It seems like everything is bursting into flower or buzzing around said flowers.

We've had our mason bee house out for a couple of years but this is the first time it's been occupied!

Mason bees are solitary bees and fantastic pollinators, much more so than honey bees!

Claudia has been a little more active then she was during the colder weather...

A LITTLE more active.

She caught a vole this week!!

The perennial garden is filling in nicely right now.  I have to keep reminding myself that this was just dirt or grass when we moved in!

Most of the flowers won't pop for a few more weeks but I love the greens!

And we have SOME flowers.

peonies...so close!

Lots of columbines!  This is Nellie Barlow...

Unfortunately, one flower that we missed this year was the apple blossom.  Normally our tree blossoms in mid-April.

This year, not one...single...blossom.  Instead, unsightly spots and curled leaves.

We've got apple scab, a fungal disease.  We need to treat the tree before it's fully leafed out, so it's too late this year to do anything.  A shame, because I'm STILL pulling frozen apples out of the freezer every week for oatmeal or apple cake from last year's crop.  I'll be missing those apples this winter!

Back to work.  Have a great week!

spring things 2025

There's a slow creep of green...

columbine

hairy rock cress

...and a bit of color too!  These daffodils were ready to POP earlier this week!

The best time to pick is just before they open up.

...because they open...

...fast!

We've got daylilies coming up too.

We had a big storm last week, and several trees were down....some completely uprooted.  A blooming elm tree was one such victim, but at least I got to pick some branches for another spring bouquet.

I love the flowers.

Almost a month later than planned, I finally got some sweet peas planted as well.

They're so easy.  No soaking, no nicking, no heat mats or special lights.  Put them in containers with damp soil...

...and put them in a cool, dark place.  In ten days, you'll have seedlings.  Calendar marked!

The warm weather turned our normally rambunctious kittens into drowsy, lazy cats.

The reprieve is kind of nice.  Maybe they're finally growing up!

Have a great week!

P.S.  Check out the SPRING CHORUS at one of our favorite spring hiking locations, Bean Blossom Bottoms.  The spring peepers have been out in force in our pond and as soon as the water level recedes, we'll be heading to "BBB" to check it out!

cake and ice...temps

 Birthday week!!

Six-inch four-layer German chocolate cake with chocolate frosting

Todd has been getting over a really terrible cold and had zero energy, but we managed a short walk and a museum trip.  The cake I made had the most delicious pecan/coconut filling that I've ever tasted, and I'm not a fan of pecans.

As an afterthought, I also made a lemon cream pie with graham-almond crust.  I like lemon and have had a lot of lemon desserts, but this, too, was the best in its class, in my opinion.  We groaned in delight for DAYS!

A lot of delight outside, too.  Green, green, green!

The apple blossoms withstood the rain...

...but not the wind.

Lilacs have come and gone, too.

So much growing, though.

Claudia is loving life in warmer temperatures.

She's yet to bring us any pests this year, although I saw her this week with a suspicious feather hanging out of her mouth...

The deer are starting to appear in the daytime, and I hear turkeys gobbling in the early mornings now.

our back field

I'm slowly, slowing working on getting my winter sow garden seedlings planted.  I have a low tolerance for cold, and although Todd loves these 55-degree days, I'm shivering in three layers.  It's windy!!  Somehow it feels even colder than wintertime...for once I'm ready for summer.

Warmer temps coming soon.  Have a great week!
